I appreciate your insights and agree with you. I spent way too long believing that my characters and settings needed the exhaustive descriptions of writers like George R R Martin and Stephen King. Sometimes that's appropriate but it's also easy to get lost in the description and lose track of what is actually happening in the story. For me that's the dividing line. When the narrative gets lost in the sea of description, it doesn't matter anymore.
