Why do we completely lose ourselves in our favorite books? Is it the way the author captures our imagination and we get sucked into this deep, compelling story?

Is it something that we see inside the characters that resembles our own story?

This morning during my workout, this question about what actually connects us to the stories we as readers (and even movie/TV show fans) prize so much came rushing to the surface of my mind.

It’s something worth exploring. Especially as a writer who is creating new worlds and telling the depths of the human story in every sentence and paragraph.

Which is a great space for you, my friend and reader, to pause and ask yourself the questions I just posed above.

Maybe each of us are drawn to stories for different reasons. Hey, that’s cool.

Yet I think there are some very succinct and particular things that most of us relate with in this regard.

For me, when the lead character (or even secondary characters) are facing an obstacle or challenge that mirrors something I am wrestling with, I pay closer attention to the character development. I want to see if I can learn something from the character’s experience that might help me in my journey.
